JOHANNESBURG - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says a charge of violating the Riotous Assemblies Act laid against its leader Julius Malema is just a political ploy to delegitimise their stance over the land issue.

Malema is set to appear before the Bloemfontein magistrates court on Monday after being charged with having instructed members of his party to occupy vacant land.

He was also charged in Newcastle for making the same comments. This case has been postponed to October to allow his legal team time to challenge the constitutionality of the act.

EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says: “They want the chief to appear, knowing very well that there’s a process underway at a higher court which challenges the constitutionality of the Riotous Assemblies Act.”
