The Agricultural Industry Association has asked the Public Protector and the Auditor-General to investigate how millions of rands meant for the relief of farmers affected by last year's severe drought was underspent by 30%.
The association claims that less than 10% of the funds reached affected farmers and that most of the money was wasted on service providers who knew little or nothing about agriculture.
Agri SA's Omri van Zyl says said: "Looking at the procurement of those funds, we’re interested to see which process was followed because we know everybody in the industry and none of these service providers are remotely known to us. How did they select these service providers?"
