Social grants more prevalent than salaries in EC - Survey
According to Stats SA’s annual General Household Survey, the Eastern Cape has the most grant beneficiaries.
CAPE TOWN - Social grants are more prevalent than salaries in the Eastern Cape.
That’s according to Stats SA’s annual General Household Survey released earlier on Wednesday.
The data was gathered between January and December 2016 and the survey has been conducted for 15 years.
Grant recipients have more than doubled over the past 13 years to 29.9% of the country’s population.
The percentage of households with at least one person receiving a grant has increased from 29.9% to 44.8% over the same period.
The Eastern Cape has the most beneficiaries with more than a third of the population depending on grants.
The General Household Survey has also found grants are more prevalent than salaries as a source of income in that province.
Gauteng and the Western Cape are the only two provinces where more than two-thirds of households report salaries as the main source of income.
