Shoprite closes Freedom Park store after robbery
A 56-year-old branch manager was killed and another person injured on Monday night after a gang of about 25 men allegedly robbed the centre.
JOHANNESBURG – The Shoprite supermarket at the Matlapeng Shopping Centre in Freedom Park, south of Johannesburg, has been closed after one of its employees was shot and killed there.
The 56-year-old branch manager was gunned down last night after a gang of about 25 men allegedly robbed the centre.
Another man was also shot and is currently recovering in hospital.
Customers are being turned away from the store.
Three security guards are standing beside the glass door and there is a sign notifying customers that the store is closed for the day.
Eyewitness News tried to speak to staff and management at the store but they have all refused to comment.
Customers also say they have no idea what happened here last night.
It's understood 25 men travelling in two minibus taxis stormed into the centre and barged into the Shoprite store – as well as a liquor outlet and a restaurant – where they robbed employees and customers.
It’s believed they also stole undisclosed amounts of cash before shooting the two men, killing one of them.
Police are investigating.
