Motlanthe: Women abuse can't be ignored

JOHANNESBURG - Former President Kgalema Motlanthe says the recent spate of killings and abuse of women in the country detracts from human rights and makes a mockery of South Africa's Constitution.

He was speaking at an Oxfam launch at Constitution Hill on Thursday.

The former president spoke out against abuse.

ÔÇťAmong the unspeakable things that strangulates society today is gender abuse, where the daily subordination of women culminates in horrible acts of physical abuse, including death."

He says South Africa women are living in fear and it cannot be ignored.

The former presidents adds that abuse against women challenges the democratic foundations that the country is building.
