JOHANNESBURG - Protesting outsourced workers are demanding permanent employment at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

The Pretoria campus has been shut for the day because of the demonstration, meaning thousands of students are missing lectures.

The outsourced security, cleaning and catering workers say TUT is failing to take their demands seriously.

Spokesman Japhter Mokoena explains: “We are now demonstrating outside the campus. We are still waiting to meet with them as they’re meeting first. They’ll meet with us after their meeting.”

The university, however, says it’s meeting with workers in the hope of reaching a compromise.
