Mbalula: Women abuse should be treated as serious crime
Fikile Mbalula says minor crimes against women such as being hit or kicked can result in a fatal assault.
JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says the abuse of women should be treated as a serious crime.
He's encouraged women to report all forms of abuse.
Mbalula says minor crimes against women such as being hit or kicked can result in a fatal assault.
Speaking at a briefing ahead of his budget vote debate in Parliament on Tuesday afternoon, Mbalula has announced a shake-up at station level aimed at ensuring women are taken seriously when they report abuse.
“If you can get to a roadblock and if you offer money for papgeld (bribe) you get arrested, and if you get to a roadblock and have cases of women abuse reported, you must also be arrested.”
Over the weekend, the minister said no woman should be turned away from a police station.
Violence against women has been in the spotlight in the wake of the murders of several women and children in the country.
