JOHANNESBURG - The family of former top cop Piet Byleveld say he is in a critical condition.

Byleveld, who was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, was admitted to hospital in Roodepoort on Tuesday evening.

The top detective has worked on South Africa's biggest cases, including the Leigh Matthews case where Donovan Moodley was convicted for kidnapping and murdering her.

His stepdaughter Virnalize Welthagen says: “The doctor was here this morning. He said it’s a matter of time. They are just keeping him comfortable now.”
