CAPE TOWN – Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti says his department is working on transforming the land claims commission into a Chapter Nine institution.

Nkwinti delivered the department's R10 billion budget vote in Parliament today.

“Because land was taken from people over centuries, a lot of the people from whom land was taken through wars of dispossession. There are so many embedded land claims, and some of [those] related to traditional areas where we have traditional leadership.”

He says they are working on transforming the commission.

Nkwinti says traditional leaders have cautioned him to be careful when processing land claims that have traditional institutions involved.

“Follow the then Nhlapo Commission so that together we can enjoy this land that has been brought back to us. That is essentially what drove us to go to the Cabinet and request that we open the land claims.”
