Her boyfriend, Sandile Mantsoe, has been arrested for her murder and remains behind bars.
The Mokoena family say Karabo had opened an assault case against her boyfriend before she died.
In addition, Mokoena's friend Neo Mahlobane confirmed the abuse.
“I don’t know whether I’m going forward or backwards… I’m beaten.”
Mokoena’s guidance coach Adele Tjale says she once came to her house battered.
“There was a time when she came into my home completely battered. This child looked at me and said ‘mom, I don’t care who did what but this is the temple of the living God’.”
Mokoena’s boyfriend has been remanded in prison until his next appearance in court next week.
