4 more bodies found in Free State mine, bringing total to 29

Police have confirmed four more bodies have been retrieved from the Eland mine shaft following an explosion on Monday.

DURBAN – Two Zimbabwean families have come forward to identify bodies after Free State police confirmed that four more bodies have been retrieved from a disused Eland mine shaft after an explosion on Monday.

This brings the total number of fatalities to 29.

Police spokesperson Thandi Mbambo said: “Today four bodies shave also been pulled out of the mine, which brings the total number since Monday to 29.”

Authorities are continuing with rescue operations after alleged illegal miners went underground earlier this week.
