JOHANNESBURG – Free State police say rescue workers are expected to retrieve more bodies from a Welkom mine in the wake of an explosion there last week.

It’s not yet known what triggered the explosion at the Eland Shaft Gold Mine on Thursday, but 11 bodies have so far been recovered.

An inquest has been opened to establish their identities of.

The police's Thandi Mbambo said: “At this stage it’s impossible to detect as to where they were and who they are but what we suspect is that it could be zama zamas (illegal miners).”
