CAPE TOWN – The family of an 18-year-old pupil who was murdered and reportedly cannibalised by a cellmate at the Beaufort West police station is not happy with his killer's sentence.

Zuko Mgugquthu was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to killing Gerdo Karelse in June.

The deceased was being held on a charge of assault.

Karelse's family believes his death was not thoroughly investigated by police.

His mother Sannie Wyls says she can't accept the sentence handed down to her son's killer.

The Beaufort West police captain on duty at the time of the attack was fired following a disciplinary hearing.

Another officer who was also disciplined resigned.
