JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng MMC for Housing Mzobani Ntuli says there are a lot of housing issues in the south of Johannesburg where protests are currently underway.

Early on Monday morning, residents of Freedom Park Lenasia and Eldorado Park blocked several roads with burning tyres and rocks.

Residents are protesting over access to land.

Ntuli says he is in communication with community leaders to resolve their grievances.

Earlier, police fired rubber bullets to disperse a group of protesters.

One of the protesters confirmed that the protest is over access to land.

“Municipal land that was occupied by the backyard dwellers from Freedom Park, those people were forcefully and violently removed by Metro Police three weeks back.”

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini says: “I’m not aware of any injuries but police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd that are blocking the road, and they also reported a car burning on the N12 but police are there trying to calm the situation.”
