Security stepped up at Wits after protest
The university’s Shirona Patel says all academic activities will continue as usual.
JOHANNESBURG - Security has been stepped up at Wits University's main and education campuses in Braamfontein after a protest on Thursday.
A group of students reportedly blocked several entrances, preventing staff from leaving.
A meeting is scheduled to take place between student leaders and university management on Friday morning.
The university says it has not yet received a list of demands but it appears students are protesting over financial aid, bursaries and accommodation.
The university’s Shirona Patel says all entrances are clear and there’s no sign of protesters.
“Our campus protection services are on standby as are the police. It is safe for people on campus and all university activities continue as usual.”
