JOHANNESBURG – The Golden Highway has been barricaded with rocks and stones due to a protest in Finetown.

Traffic has been severely affected on the R558.

There have been reports of violence but police say the situation is calm at the moment.

It’s unclear why the community is protesting.

The police’s Mavela Masondo says: “Our members are on the ground and are busy removing those stones and rocks. We can confirm that traffic is flowing at the moment and we’re monitoring the situation very closely.”

One of the residents says he witnessed a violent incident.

“There was a guy that almost got shot by the railway police. He was trying to put fire on the railway line and they took out their firearm and that’s really terrible.”
