Murder case opened after guard dies following Nyanga shootout

A security guard who was shot and wounded during a stand-off with attackers died in hospital on Tuesday morning.

CAPE TOWN - Police have opened a case of murder following the shooting of a security guard during a hostage drama at the Nyanga Junction Mall in Manenberg.

Patrick Castle was shot and wounded during a stand-off with attackers on Monday.

The 25-year-old security officer died in hospital on Tuesday morning.

The police's Noloyiso Goxana says, “The 25-year-old man, employed by a security company contracted to Shoprite, was seriously wounded when the suspects and security personnel exchanged fire at the shopping centre during an attempted robbery that turned into a hostage situation.”

One of the suspects was shot dead by police on Monday night.

Another who was wounded during a separate shootout on Monday afternoon remains in hospital under police guard.

Police officials are patrolling the inside parameter of Nyanga Junction Mall following Monday’s lengthy hostage drama.

All shops have been reopened and deliveries are being made.

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has condemned the attack on Twitter, saying criminals must not hijack public spaces.
