2 initiates die in Mpumalanga
Officials say preliminary reports have shown that there was some negligence from the traditional surgeons.
JOHANNESBURG - The Mpumalanga House of Traditional Leaders says two initiates from different initiation schools have died in the KwaMhlanga area this week.
It says the cause of the deaths is unknown at this stage, but preliminary reports have shown that there was some negligence from the traditional surgeons.
Officials say they are growing increasingly concerned about the deaths, and are calling upon traditional leaders to adhere to all prescripts and requirements that permit the operation of initiation schools.
Mpumalanga House of Traditional Leaders' chief Lameck Mokoena says post-mortems will be performed to determine the exact cause of the deaths.
“From the preliminary report that they have, apparently, there was some negligence from the surgeons and caregivers for those initiates. We were told that after they were put through rituals, there was excessive bleeding which they could not stop in time and those initiates passed on.”
