JOHANNESBURG – The Basic Education Department says it’s deeply worried about the disruptions to learning in the protest-hit the town of Vuwani.

A shutdown by residents in the area has entered its second week, with the community demanding that Vuwani return to its former municipality.

The protests over demarcation turned deadly last week when two people were killed in a car accident caused by a barricade placed on a main road during a demonstration.

Education spokesman Naledzani Rasila says the department working to make sure thousands of pupils are returned to the classroom.

“We are having meetings with our own stakeholders, trying to see what we can do. Should the strike end tomorrow, what can we do to assist our learners?”
