CAPE TOWN - A woman is expected to appear in court on Wednesday in connection with the death of her baby in Strand.

The suspect allegedly locked herself in a burning shack with her two children on Monday evening in Lwandle informal settlement.

The woman and one of her children, a three-year-old, survived, but the infant died.

The woman will face a charge of murder when she appears in the Strand Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The fire destroyed three structures, including the one the mother and her children had been in, in Pholile Street.

It's still unclear what caused that fire.

Various other fires took place over the long weekend in Imizamo Yethu, Wallacedene, Gugulethu, Mfuleni, Crossroads, Lavender Hill and New Rest informal settlement.

Two men lost their lives in the fires, one in Mandela Park in Hout Bay and the other in Gugulethu.

At least 600 people have been left homeless.
