WC & Gauteng authorities to beef up operations ahead of Easter
Road safety operations in the Western Cape will be beefed up this week ahead of the Easter long weekend.
CAPE TOWN - Road safety operations in the Western Cape will be beefed up this week ahead of the Easter long weekend.
Officials say the province's road death toll remains disturbingly high.
Last weekend alone, 18 people died on Cape's roads, while 5 fatalities were reported this past weekend.
Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa says: “With long distances, motorists become tired and fall asleep behind the wheel. The next moment they’re either off the road or in front of an oncoming vehicle.”
In Gauteng, police say they’ve planned a high visibility campaign at crime hot spots, malls and shopping centres in preparation for the Easter weekend.
The police have called on residents to assist officers in the fight against crime.
Spokesperson Kay Makhubele says their aim is to make residents and visitors feel safe this holiday period.
