CAPE TOWN - The mother of a gangster has urged Worcester residents to take a proactive stand against gangsterism.

The woman turned her son over to authorities last week after he confessed to killing a rival gang member.

At least five people have died in a spate of shootings in the Boland town in recent days.

Eerily quiet streets, locked playgrounds and a heavy police presence signifies a seemingly tightening grip the gangs have over the Avian Park community.

While neighbours could be seen cowering behind half-drawn curtains, hesitant to speak the media, one resident has urged witnesses to the brazen gang shootings to come forward.

“When I see things happening in our community, I call the police. Why can’t other parents do the same when it comes to their children? We’re not helping our children by not reporting them.”

The mother of two says she had to report her eldest son to the police after she became aware of his involvement in a recent killings.
