Siphomandla Choma was beaten up late last year allegedly for stealing R150.
JOHANNESBURG - The Mpumalanga Education Department has confirmed a pupil who was assaulted in Middelburg allegedly by a school principal has died.
Siphomandla Choma was beaten up late last year allegedly for stealing R150. The teenager was paralysed as a result.
The department says the principal has since been charged with misconduct and is due to appear before a disciplinary committee.
Spokesperson Jasper Zwane says the pupil died on Sunday.
“We want to take this opportunity to convey our sincere condolences to the family and to the school. The MEC for education will visit the family tomorrow at 10am.”
The department says it’s shocked and saddened by the death of Choma.
Zwane added the school principal has since been suspended and a disciplinary hearing is currently underway.
The department said it had conducted a thorough investigation into the Manyano Primary School principal in Middelburg and was ready to proceed with the disciplinary process.
“We’ve concluded the investigation as the department and after the investigation we charged the principal with misconduct.”
The department has sent their condolences to the teenager's family and is due to visit the Choma family on Tuesday.
In March, the Mpumalanga Education Department confirmed receiving a R25 million lawsuit from the Choma family.
However, it said it was going to defend itself against the lawsuit brought by the Choma family.
