CAPE TOWN – The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) will be probing corruption and maladministration claims against the Eastern Cape's Social Development Department.

President Jacob Zuma has authorised the SIU to look into the provincial department's affairs.

He's also approved a similar investigation into the Eastern Cape's Alfred Nzo District Municipality.

The SIU has been authorised to investigate allegations of unlawful conduct by Eastern Cape Social Development officials.

It will also be looking at claims of theft of public funds and any unauthorised expenditure.

The Alfred Nzo District Municipality will also be under the unit's microscope - for any possible wrongdoing in awarding of tenders or municipal payments.

The municipality is already the subject of a corruption investigation by the Hawks amounting to R28 million.

In 2013 three municipal officials were convicted of corruption in a case involving salaries for ghost employees and fictitious claims.
