JOHANNESBURG - City Power board chairman Frank Chikane has announced that a new board has been appointed to take over at the power utility.

Last month, Mayor Herman Mashaba instituted a forensic investigation into alleged corruption involving the city's smart electricity meter tender.

Mashaba accused the board of failing to act and suspend City Power MD Sicelo Xulu.

Xulu has since gone on voluntarily leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Mashaba says it was time to change operation at the power utility.

“We’re going to be announcing new board members. I’m pleased with the process that we’ve undertaken. It’s very important that we respond to what the voters have requested of us on 3 August 2016. Voters of this city, 56% of them, said to us they needed change.”
