JOHANNESBURG - The International Relations Department has confirmed that the charges against a South African man and his Ukranian fiance have been dropped in Dubai.

The couple was arrested this week when a local doctor discovered that the woman was pregnant out of wedlock.

Sex before marriage in the region is illegal.

The department says authorities in the United Arab Emirates made the decision to drop charges.

Spokesman Clayson Monyela says it’s now up to the couple to decide if they want to return to South Africa.

“We may not necessarily be privy to what circumstances led to this particular decision. All we know is that they were facing these charges based on domestic laws in that country. We are just happy that this has happened.”
