JOHANNESBURG - The University of Johannesburg will tighten security measures after 13 students were robbed at gunpoint at the Kingsway campus on Wednesday night.

The students were studying in the labs at 11pm when two armed suspects came in to take their laptops and cellphones.

The suspects fled the scene on foot and fired close-range shots at the university’s reaction unit in the car park before getting away.

Some of the stolen goods were recovered after the shootout.

The university says while they investigate how the suspects got onto campus, they will start searching people at all entrances.

Head of communication Kaamini Reddy says the university will provide counselling and support to the students.
