JOHANNESBURG – Deputy Telecommunications Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize says her department is working hard to bring down the costs of data.

Last year, South Africans took to social media to rally against the high cost of mobile data, using the hashtag #DataMustFall.

There have been calls for government and regulators to reign in network providers’ data charges, with some studies indicating that South Africans spend almost a quarter of their salary on mobile services.

Mkhize says her department is working on this issue.

“We’re working hard in the spirit of economic inclusion of vulnerable people in the townships, in rural areas. We see it a critical lever of that inclusive agenda.”
