Good rain spells better maize output - Agri SA
The price of maize meal is expected to drop drastically in about five months’ time if the rain continues into winter.
JOHANNESBURG – Agri SA says it is expecting decent maize output this year, as rain continues to fall on parts of the country.
Earlier this month, the National Agricultural Market Council said food prices were likely to drop this year after food inflation rose to 11.7% in December due to the drought.
The council says it’s expecting the price of maize meal to drop drastically in about five months’ time if the rain continues into winter.
Agri SA’s Omri van Zyl says: “Through the rest of the country, I think we are beginning to get on par. I think our maize output will be way above what we had last year, barring some of the (fall) army worm damage.”
