CAPE TOWN - Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas has called on citizens to speak out on government policy or live with the consequences.

He was speaking at a Daily Maverick event on the 2017 Budget earlier on Thursday.

The Deputy Finance Minister says the country needs active and outspoken citizens as well as robust media probing government’s shortcomings.

He says without this, the consequences could be dire.

Jonas says it is easy to blame politicians for an institution or country’s downfall but warns citizens should ask themselves what role they played when the downfall started.

He further warns selfish interests will drive the trajectory of the country if citizens are not active.
