FUL urges govt to rethink ICC exit notice
Freedom Under Law says government should use embrace the opportunity to reconsider SA's withdrawal from the ICC.
JOHANNESBURG - Freedom Under Law (FUL) has urged President Zuma to use the ruling by the North Gauteng High Court as an opportunity to reconsider South Africa's withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
On Wednesday, the High Court in Pretoria ordered government to revoke the notice of intention to withdraw from the ICC on the basis that it was unconstitutional and invalid.
Freedom Under Law says if government turns its back on the ICC, South Africa leaves victims of these crimes without effective remedy.
The legal NGO's chairperson Johann Kriegler says abandoning the ICC was clearly a mistake.
“It would be tragic if South Africa, one of the leaders in the establishment of the ICC, were now to abandon the Court. We sincerely urge government to take this time to reconsider their decision.”
