Interventions in place to deal with drug smuggling cops, says police chief
Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane says alleged drug smuggling by police & Hawks members is concerning.
JOHANNESBURG - Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane says there are interventions in place to deal with claims by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) that police are involved in a drugs syndicate at OR Tambo International Airport.
Briefing Parliament's portfolio committee on police this month, Ipid officials told Members of Parliament that drugs worth millions of rand seized at the airport often don't make it to evidence.
Phahlane responded to questions from Parliaments portfolio committee for police on Wednesday.
He says the alleged drug smuggling scheme by police and Hawks members is concerning.
“We’re not going to disagree with the fact that there’s been challenges in that area. Crime intelligence, Hawks and detective services continue to do work. We hope we’ll get all those involved at some point.”
