HARARE - President Robert Mugabe says his party Zanu-PF believes he’s the only acceptable candidate for next year’s elections.

Mugabe was speaking in an interview to mark his upcoming 93rd birthday on Tuesday.

These are not the words of a leader who has any intention of stepping down any time soon.

President Mugabe said that of course if he felt he couldn’t carry on; he'd tell his party.

But for now, that time hasn’t come and everyone in the party wants him to stand for elections, he added.

As every year, the president is interviewed by state TV ahead of his birthday and parts of the interview have been published in Sunday's state press.

Mugabe's birthday party will be held next Saturday in the Matopos, near Bulawayo.
