JOHANNESBURG – Reverend Frank Chikane says allegations of corruption levelled against his wife are unfounded and slanderous.

Officials, who are allegedly South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) members, claim City Power Managing Director Sicelo Xulu approved and awarded a tender to Chikane's wife.

The allegations come in the wake of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba launching a forensic investigation into the power utility's tenders, valued at billions of rand.

Mashaba also this week fired the MMC responsible for infrastructure, Anthony Still, saying they couldn't agree on how to deal with corruption at City Power.

Chikane says he's given the officials until next week to retract the allegations or face legal action.

“I sent them letters of demand on Monday, and gave them seven days to retract and stop spreading the lies, and apologise.”
