JOHANNESBURG - Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies says government has established a task team to address challenges in the poultry industry.

Davies is among Members of Parliament (MPs) who are debating President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation Address on Wednesday afternoon.

The poultry industry is under pressure from cheap European imports which have sparked warnings of massive job cuts.

Davies says it’s important to strike a balance on chicken imports.

“We must also recognise that if we don’t act against the surge of imports, which is currently confronting the industry, we might not have an industry to raise the competitiveness of. The fact is, there are serious structural distortions in the double market for poultry products.”
