CAPE TOWN - The Cape Winelands Fire and Rescue Department says eight ground teams are fighting a fire raging near the Du Toitskloof Pass that broke out on Thursday.

Nearly 1,000 hectares of land have already been destroyed.

Fire and Rescue spokesperson Heinrich Louw says the fire does not pose any danger to property.

“We activated aerial support and have four choppers water-bombing the area. We have 120 men on the fire lines, 13 fire engines from Cape Winelands, three from Drakenstein and three others from Cape Nature.”

On Thursday, surrounding farm communities were advised to evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure.
