Firefighters work through night to contain blaze near Du Toitskloof Pass
Some surrounding farm communities were advised to evacuate as a precautionary measure.
CAPE TOWN - Firefighters in the Breede Valley in the Western Cape have worked through the night to try and contain a blaze near the Du Toitskloof Pass.
Four helicopters were deployed on Thursday to assist in operations.
Some surrounding farm communities were also advised to evacuate as a precautionary measure.
Firefighters braced fierce winds to slow down the rapidly spreading blaze.
By Thursday evening the fire had already ravaged several hectares of vegetation and threatened to spread to surrounding fields.
Several residents were forced to flee their homes after the flames came dangerously close to their properties.
Crews on the fire line have been assisted by officials from Working on Fire, Cape Nature and the Breede Valley Fire Services.
Authorities say additional crews are on standby to assist in firefighting efforts.
