CAPE TOWN - The Cape Winelands Fire and Rescue Department says more than 1,300 hectares of land have been destroyed in a fire near Paarl.

The blaze broke out near the Du Toitskloof Mountain Pass on Thursday afternoon and fire crews have been battling flames throughout Thursday night.

Eight ground teams are currently battling the blaze.

Fire and Rescue spokesperson Heinrich Louw says that no property is in danger.

“The IC team and firefighting crews managed to stabilise the situation, but there are still active lines burning which are a matter of concern. Firefighting crews will continue with firefighting operations throughout the day and the aerial resources will remain on standby at the scene.”

On Thursday, surrounding farm communities were advised to evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure.
