CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Social Development MEC Albert Fritz has ordered a probe into claims of child abuse at a Manenberg Early Childhood Development centre.

He's also condemned threats of violence against social workers who initially tried to investigate the matter.

The department's action comes after the mother of a child at the centre lodged an assault complaint.

The woman claims her child was assaulted by staff.

Another parent claims her child was throttled.

The department’s Sihle Ngobese says, “Our actions are guided by legislation, namely the Children’s Act of 2005. It mandates the department to act in the best interests of children. The investigation will determine the course going forward.”
