CAPE TOWN - Amnesty International says criminal charges leveled against Zimbabwean activist Evan Mawarire are ridiculous.

He was arrested at Harare International Airport on Wednesday.

Mawarire left Zimbabwe for the United States in July last year after having been detained for publicly criticising President Robert Mugabe and mounting a social media campaign against him.

Amnesty International’s Robert Shivambu has called for his immediate release.

“Absolutely ridiculous, coming after a similar charge against him last year, it is designed to make him stop his human right activism and to punish him for speaking out against the declining human rights situation in Zimbabwe.”
