Cape Metrorail train driver attacked while on duty
The driver has been placed on a week's sick leave after he was attacked while at the helm of a train.
CAPE TOWN - A Metrorail train driver has been injured in a brick-throwing attack near Stellenbosch.
The driver has been placed on a week's sick leave after he was attacked while at the helm of a train at the weekend.
The United National Transport Union says that Willem Spence had just passed an informal settlement near the Du Toit railway station, when he saw a man wielding a brick standing on the railway line ahead of him.
The man hurled the brick which shattered the driver's window. Spence sustained injuries to his face and arms.
The train was filled with commuters at the time of the attack.
