AngloGold hopes to avoid retrenchments
The mining giant has refuted claims that its sealed a deal with the National Union of Mineworkers to save over 800 jobs.
JOHANNESBURG - AngloGold says while it wants to find a resolution to avoid shedding over 800 jobs across the country as soon as possible, it’s unclear how long discussions with organised labour will take.
The union announced on Monday that its meeting with the firm was successful and that the mining company would no longer retrench workers.
But AngloGold's Chris Nthite says although talks to mitigate job shedding started on Monday, it's premature to announce that retrenchments are not going ahead as planned.
“The engagement on that is still ongoing. Next week there will be further engagements so we haven’t reached any firm agreement at this stage.”
