CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says it's investigating a claim of corporal punishment at a Gugulethu primary school.

It's alleged a 10-year-old grade five learner was been beaten with a pipe by his teacher.

Spokesperson for the Western Cape Education MEC Jessica Shelver says the incident happened at the Siyazingisa Primary School.

“I’ve been informed by Labour Relations Department that the teacher has not been at school this week, she has taken sick leave. The investigation will continue but as the teacher isn't at school, she doesn’t pose any immediate danger to the learner.

“The learner is receiving support from our social workers and learner support team.”
