CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Community Safety Department has condemned two separate shootings during which a mother was killed and a five-year-old and six-month-old were wounded.

The baby girl was shot and wounded in an apparent robbery in the Sweet Home Farm Informal Settlement in Philippi on Wednesday.

Her mother was killed after three gunmen reportedly stormed their home.

On Tuesday night, a five-year-old girl was shot and wounded after being caught the crossfire of gang violence in Hanover Park.

Community Safety MEC Dan Plato says: "It’s shocking and we regret the shootings. I believe in the one incident, the mother was killed in a home robbery."

Both children are in critical but stable conditions in hospital.
