CAPE TOWN - The Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) says it appears robbery may have been the motive behind a shooting which left a mother dead and her baby girl wounded.

The incident happened at an informal settlement this week.

Nyanga CPF chairperson Martin Makhasi says according to information he’s gathered, the mother was killed in a robbery. Her six-month-old baby girl was hit by a stray bullet, leaving her seriously wounded.

He says three gunmen stormed their home demanding money.

Makhasi says the men opened fire when the mother refused.

"It came as a shock because we’re moving from the premise that communities are supposed to protect women and children."

The six-month-old baby remains in a critical condition at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

No arrests have yet been made.
