CAPE TOWN - The Water and Sanitation Department says the current drought could influence its review of the free water provision policy.

According to the policy, local government should provide each poor household with six kilolitres of water per month or 25litres per person per day - for free.

The department's Sputnik Ratau says the revision of the free water provision policy is ongoing.

“But also, there are instances where those reviews could be influenced by outside issues, for instance the situation in which we find ourselves in now, with the drought.”

However, he says it is too early to preempt the outcome of discussions

Apart from the amount of free water allocated, the definition of key words in the policy like indigent and household will also be scrutinised.
