'Funding for poor students must cover expenses beyond tuition'
Statistician General Pali Lehohla says when students turn to Stats SA for support it extends beyond simply covering tuition fees.
PRETORIA - Statistician General Pali Lehohla believes funding for poor students must cover expenses beyond tuition if they are to be properly supported to be successful at tertiary institutions.
Lehohla made the comments at the Higher Education Fees Commissio n in Centurion on Monday.
President Jacob Zuma established the commission last year to investigate the feasibility of fee free higher education.
Lehohla says when students turn to Stats South Africa for support, it extends beyond simply covering tuition fees.
“The recommendation we have always made was when we give support, you must have accommodation, books and everything.”
He says while there are more black university students, the proportion of successful graduates is declining.
Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is scheduled to make his submission to the commission on Wednesday.
