JOHANNESBURG – Wits University says it’s made a concession to enable the majority of its students to register.

The university says a number of academically successful students were unable to register for the 2017 academic year due to a lack of funds.

Wits said that after talks with the Department of Higher Education and other role-players, they agreed that students who owe less than R10,000 will have their debt rolled over to this year and those who owe more can enter into a payment plan.

The university's Shirona Patel says interest will not be charged if students abide by the payment plan.

“Based on the meeting that they had, they agreed that the department would cover the fee increase of 8% or gap funding for 2017. This includes both students on NSFAS, as well as missing middle students.”
