Man due in court for alleged illegal possession of crayfish

CAPE TOWN - A 26-year-old Manenberg man is due to appear in court on Monday for the alleged illegal possession of crayfish.

He was arrested on Friday when police raided his home.

They found more than 2,500 undersized crayfish tails and 73 whole crayfish believed to be worth more than R300,000.

The police's Andre Traut says, “The suspect was arrested and is expected to make a court appearance in Athlone on Monday.”

At the same time, members of an apparent international abalone smuggling syndicate are set to be sentenced in February.

They were found guilty of a combined 28 counts including racketeering, money laundering, fraud and contraventions of the Marine Living Resources Act at the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court on Friday.
