WC fire season: Firefighters monitor hot spots
Firefighters are monitoring hot spots in the Stilbaai area after a blaze ravaged hundreds of hectares of land.
CAPE TOWN - Firefighters are monitoring hot spots in the Stilbaai area.
A blaze there has ravaged hundreds of hectares of land.
A least five structures have also been destroyed.
Provincial Disaster Risk Management Head Colin Deiner says, “The main focus now is really just monitoring those hot spots and to focus our attention on any new fires.”
LISTEN: How do you determine the cause of a fire?
The Western Cape Environmental Affairs Department says the causes of numerous wildfires that have ravaged parts of the province have yet to be established.
Veld fires across the Peninsula, Paarl, Stilbaai and Tulbagh are but a few that have wreaked havoc in recent weeks.
Police are investigating arson allegations following a massive fire in Paarl and surrounding areas.
It's widely believed some of the blazes were started deliberately.
The Overberg’s fire chief also claims youths were behind a series of vegetation fires in Grabouw.
